What was Tesco looking for?

As part of Tesco’s programme of activity to tackle climate change it has a policy of reducing energy consumption across its estate. Although it has a massive portfolio of stores, Tesco’s distribution depots were seen as vital areas where energy reduction could be most effective, as these sites represented 10 percent of the company's overall energy consumption.

How did we help?

In the refrigerated zones, better control systems and energy saving lighting were fitted along with upgraded dehumidifier plant. The ambient zones have gained higher performance heating, ventilation and lighting, and the control systems have been enhanced to optimise energy efficiency. Lighting has also been made more effective so that it now provides the same light level with better colour rendition whilst maintaining health and safety requirements and cutting energy costs. The offices associated with the distribution centres have also benefited from the new programme.  Effective controls in the offices ensure efficient use of daylight through the 24 hour work day and use occupancy sensors to switch off any lights that are not needed by the office staff.

Results

By executing this carefully targeted programme, all sites have now lowered their energy consumption and have gained from improved electricity, gas and water supplies whilst reducing CO2 emissions. This programme has generated financial savings in excess of one million pounds within a payback period of 28 months.
