If you've ever driven in London you'll know there are literally thousands of traffic lights. Something lots of people don't know, however, is that they are a huge target for criminal activity. The graffiti and fly-posting on traffic lights not only looks unpleasant, but is also a danger to pedestrians; particularly those who are poor sighted or have a hearing impediment. The spray paint used also interferes with the control units that manage the sequence of lights, potentially leading to a serious problem for pedestrians who have a disability.

That's where we can help. We've been carrying out the cleaning and maintenance of bus shelters and stops and other related street furniture for years, so we can also help to clean defaced traffic lights.

MITIE deploys a mobile supervisor on a scooter to inspect traffic lights at various locations across the city. The scooter is fitted with under-seat storage and a rear carrier equipped with emergency cleaning materials, enabling the supervisor to address graffiti on the spot during the inspections.

In addition to the supervisor there are also three mobile cleaners who perform the cleaning tasks. They each have a Smart car which not only minimises the impact on congestion, but also improves our ability to stop and clean the street equipment in the tightest of spots.

During inspections the team collates both high level and low level priority tasks from the daily surveys and adds these tasks to the operative’s daily route sheets.
