May Day pledges 2009
MITIE's May Day pledges are:
- Measure and report your business' carbon emissions publicly or to Business in the Community
MITIE has been publicly reporting CO2 emissions in our CR reports since 2007.
- Manage your carbon emissions by developing a carbon action plan, including setting an absolute target
MITIE has developed a carbon action plan to manage our CO2 emissions but setting an absolute target is not appropriate due to continued significant growth of our business operations. Our revenue increased by 8.2% in the reporting period 2008/09 compared to 2007/08 but CO2 emissions only increased by 5.4% (representing a ‘normalised’ reduction aligned with revenue of nearly 3%).
- Take action to reduce your business' carbon emissions
Vehicle fleet fuel consumption accounts for around 90% of our CO2 emissions and improvements in fleet management to reduce this impact have been prioritised. We will continue to reduce the average vehicle fleet CO2 emissions by purchasing another 100 low emission vehicles as part of our replacement programme and by investing in more on- board telematic tracker systems to optimise journey distances. Our fleet average emissions for 2008/09 is 154 CO2 g/km - nearly 4% lower than the previous reporting period.
- Encourage employees to reduce their carbon emissions at home and at work
MITIE’s car sharing scheme, initiated in the Midlands has already saved 8560 miles of travel between January – March 2009, reducing CO2 emissions by 2.7 tonnes. In 2008/9 we also made further investments in telephone and video conferencing facilities to help our employees reduce their business and commuting travel.
- Work in partnership with suppliers to reduce carbon emissions in the supply chain
MITIE’s Supplier Improvement Programme includes a CR review of our suppliers which specifically includes carbon management and CO2 emission reporting requirements. We have also worked in partnership with food ingredient suppliers and couriers to consolidate volume to reduce road miles.
- Encourage your customers to take action on climate change
