Aspire Defence
Services
Building refurbishment; Asbestos removal; Fire door replacement; Curtain walling.
What was our client looking for?
Aspire Defence, who manages the Larkhill Garrison on behalf of the Ministry
of Defence were looking to undertake a total building refurbishment of
‘Hardy Block’, a 3 story training facility within the confines of the army
barracks. Site personnel access is subject to enhanced clearance and
scrutiny. With a total project value of £799,000 we were chosen, in open
tender competition, to carry out the refurbishment works.
How did we help?
This five month project involved working within a “mark4b” CLASP steel
framed building which was vacated for the duration of the works.
Primary works involved the removal of extensive asbestos, originally used
in the construction 50 years ago. We project managed the removal of
the asbestos using licensed asbestos removal contractors. In addition,
the scaffold was specifically designed to accommodate the monoflex
covering which were in place for the majority of the project.
The curtain walling was instated using a nominated Kawneer approved
installer. All panels were supplemented to incorporate additional counter
terrorism standards, anti-blast and enhanced glazing to provide additional
assurance for the building user’s requirements.
Due to the recent changes to fire regulations within occupied buildings our
teams have been retrained and are qualified to install fire doors that are
compliant to the regulations but more importantly safer for the occupants.
For the Aspire Defence project our team, who are all CSCS card holders,
were able to refurbish and in most cases replace fire doors to comply with
Q-mark standards. BM TRADA Q-mark is regarded as the most rigorous
certification processes available for fire door products and is recognised by
controlling authorities, home warranty providers such as NHBC and is used
by world class construction companies and manufacturers.
Always one to enjoy using an array of our capabilities we were also
engaged to replace all suspended ceilings throughout the building,
replace all radiators and associated internal pipework, install energy
efficient lighting systems and install new electrical wiring and associated
switchgear/fuse boards.
The results
Due to the specialised functionality of this building, it was crucial for
our team to, not only understand the client’s needs, but to ensure the
delivery of services were compliant and consistent with those required.
Close monitoring and coordination in the everyday running of the project
ensured precision delivery within the agreed programme time scale and
within budget.
