What what our client looking for?

The National Theatre wanted to replace their plant equipment including
the boilers and chillers. They were aware that the equipment was nearing
the end of its viable life and was costly and inefficient to run. Most areas
containing this equipment were contaminated with asbestos which had
to be removed. Noisy works had to be completed by 10am each morning
and as the building and the surrounding area is always busy with visitors,
access to the site had to be carefully planned.

How did we help?

MITIE, acting as the main contractor on the project, stripped out the old
plant equipment and replaced it with a new combined heat and power
unit, 2 new back up boilers, buffer, water storage tanks and chillers. New
switch panels and control systems were installed.

We are experts in the removal of asbestos and ensuring a listed building
is treated with respect and returned to its original condition. Asbestos was
found in boiler seals, on fire doors and sprayed onto structural beams.
Due to access issues in some cases the decontamination units had to be
transported up narrow staircases and assembled in very constrained areas.
It was important not to interfere with the look of the building so where
we had to remove claddings we were sure to return the original material
and make good. In order to avoid and minimise welding we procured a
‘Victaulic’ jointed system. This saved a lot of time in the process and kept
hot works to a minimum.

During the works we did not want to inconvenience the 800 people
working in the building or block entrances for tourists so a builders hoist was
installed to bring operatives, tools and equipment straight up to the roof.

The results

MITIE are experts in working within occupied building and planning works to
minimise inconvenience to the occupants.
