Fire resistant wall
What was the client looking for?
SCA was moving their tissue paper storage unit into their production factory. They were looking for a specialist team to build a fire resistant wall to separate these two functions as the vertical storage of these paper reels creates the highest level of fire risk in the paper industry. The fire wall had to be built while keeping the factory fully operational.
How did we help?
We overcame the challenges of working during operating hours by combining experience, planning and a touch of fresh thinking. To minimise disruption to factory workers and production, we built the wall with Durasteel metal to ensure the buildings foundations weren’t affected and no dust would be created. MITIE are one of only four contractors in the UK who have a licence to install Durasteel walls. This specialist material is also fire resistant and prevents heat transfer across the wall in the event of a potential fire in the paper storage side of the factory. One of the main challenges as far as health and safety was concerned was the height of the factory. Our comprehensive experience and extensive training on working at height put SCA’s mind at rest. Using mobile platforms we completed the project safely, while the factory continued operating at full capacity.
The results
Despite the challenging work conditions, SCA got a new fire resistant wall on time and on budget. The factory remained operational at all times and the specialist material used to build the wall has drastically reduced the risk of fire spreading throughout the factory. All in all, a happy customer.
