What was our client looking for?
Northumbria University was looking to build a new 378 bed student accommodation block to house the increasing numbers of students attending this popular university in Newcastle.
Whelan Construction was chosen as the main contractor for the job with MITIE winning several of the internal fit-out services through a competitive tender process. As one of the largest plastering and decorating contractors in the North East of England, Whelan Construction was confident that we were the right people for the job based on previous successful projects that we’ve delivered together. By negotiating a fixed price lump sum for the contract we were also able to give our client financial reassurance in a tough current economic climate.
How did we help?
Working in partnership with Whelan Construction, our team delivered a variety of services including dry lining and plastering, stud partition, insulation, suspended ceilings, fire stopping and decoration.
As part of this project it was vital to keep on track with the programme of works to ensure the accommodation would be ready for the start of the new academic year in September.
Good communication was key to making this project a success and to ensure timelines were met. Weekly management meetings were held on-site and daily progress reports produced. When timelines did slip due to bad weather over the winter months, our team kept to the programme by increasing labour on-site and working longer hours and weekends.
The size and location of the contract caused logistical challenges for supplying and moving equipment and materials to and from the site. Our team put together a logistics plan for loading up and made sure this coordinated with other operations on-site.
A month before the end of the project, Whelan Construction went into administration. To ensure that the project wasn’t delayed, MITIE negotiated the remainder of the contract with Northumbria University, committing to the tight deadlines to ensure the accommodation block was finished in time and within budget.
Despite the challenges, MITIE delivered this project on-time and within budget. The new state-of-the-art accommodation block looks great and is ready for students starting university in the new academic year.
