What was Gloucestershire Constabulary looking for?

The old headquarters had stretched beyond capacity leading to the existence of departments housed in several out-of-date buildings spread over four different locations. To overcome these problems, a brand new modern headquarters was commissioned, requiring installation of the latest and most advanced information and communication technology. Sustainability was a key issue when planning the new building, and MITIE’s well known approach to providing sustainable solutions paid dividends with the inclusion of several major environmental initiatives.

How did we help?

The building incorporates an underfloor heating and cooling system on the ground floor, covering the impressive atrium; the restaurant; the sports hall and the adjacent changing area. 300 bore holes, reaching 100 metres into the earth, feed heat up to a plant room and heat pumps, controlled by the BMS, provide the hot or cold air, depending on requirements. This natural, energy saving system has lower long-term running costs than a conventional heating and cooling system.

MITIE also installed a ‘Stormsaver’ rainwater recovery system. Recovered rainwater collects into an underground tank and is then pumped around the building to serve the showers and WC facilities, further increasing long-term cost and energy savings. An intelligent lighting system using photocell presence detectors was implemented, for a more cost efficient and sustainable approach. MITIE sourced and installed the state-of-the-art lighting design technology.

The results…

  • BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’
  • Project delivered on time and on budget.“
I would like to thank MITIE for the outstanding efforts in delivering one of the most professional installations I have seen. The quality and professionalism of the installation is even more exceptional considering the complicated processes and difficult environments imposed by the project." - Gloucestershire Constabulary
