What was the client looking for?

Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) is operated by Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and located on the Harwell Oxford Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire. It provides a thriving and collaborative environment for research in areas such as:

  • Particle physics
  • Space science
  • Materials
  • Astronomy


There is approximately 1,200 staff at RAL supporting the work of more than 10,000 scientists and engineers, chiefly from the university research community.

RAL required specific technical maintenance services for their portfolio of properties on the Harwell Oxford Science and Innovation Campus. The properties are very diverse in terms of their technical demands, including critical laboratories and data centres, storage support buildings and general office areas. The areas across the portfolio are categorised as critical, major and minor, with corresponding levels of service delivery and performance requirements.

How did we help?

This contract initially required Mitie to manage the consolidation of various historical outsource contracts. The contract now consists of dedicated Mitie staff and various specialist sub-contractor partners, delivered via a regional operational structure. This is coordinated through the Maximo work management system.

Maintaining business continuity is a key driver for RAL and Mitie employ a highly specialised team to deliver services with a skilled internal engineering resource.

The key focus is the delivery of statutory and critical maintenance, reactive support of technical tasks and project works. This is all undertaken with strong consideration of health and safety requirements.

  • Mitie has worked with RAL to introduce new processes and systems to enhance service levels and manage costs across the portfolio


  • New asset registers have been developed to achieve more effective planned preventative maintenance activities


  • Programmes of cross-training have generated significant productivity improvements, delivering better value for money for the client
