What was University of Hertfordshire looking for?
The University wanted to create a state-of-the-art entertainment venue for the University and surrounding community, capable of staging big-name concerts but combined with informal study space. At the same time they wanted a sustainable building with a low energy profile.
How did we help?
MITIE installed the HVAC and lighting infrastructure to low carbon specifications, as well as incorporating a ground source heat pump, rainwater harvesting, and a MITIE designed energy monitoring system. The MITIE CarbonMeter has been installed in the main reception area providing real-time monitoring and display of energy consumption patterns. This highly graphical interface provides visibility of carbon, energy and utility use and is designed to increase awareness of sustainability issues and drive behavioural change on carbon issues across the site.
The results…
The building has subsequently been given a BREEAM excellent rating. Energy consumption has been positively influenced through the deployment of the CarbonMeter. Subsequently, MITIE is now maintaining the Forum building, completing the circle in MITIE’s design, install and maintain capabilities. The scalable, web-based software will allow the CarbonMeter approach to be expanded to other buildings on the campus.
