Mitie and Elements Green break ground at Staythorpe BESS
Mitie Power & Grid, working with international renewable energy developer Elements Green, has begun construction on the Staythorpe Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) – one of the largest in Europe. The £71.5 million project will create around 60 jobs during the build phase, deliver a 25.7% Biodiversity Net Gain, and ensure collaboration with local residents. Once complete in 2027, the 360MW/720MWh facility will store enough renewable energy to power over 95,000 homes for a full day, strengthening UK energy resilience and accelerating the transition to net zero.

The solar installation will produce around 2.2mWp of renewable electricity per year, enough to power the equivalent of 800 UK homes annually. The project builds on Mitie Power & Grid’s successful delivery of a solar installation at Weeton Barracks in Lancashire, which became operational earlier this year.

A laboratory for cutting-edge experiments located 1.1kilometres below ground sounds like something out of a James Bond movie. In fact, the Boulby Underground Laboratory in Yorkshire is where Mitie colleague, Maria Wood, works as a soft services manager. It’s an important job – Maria makes sure the facility is well-managed and remains spotless for all users. This includes the many scientists who travel from around the world to work in its unique environment.
