Mitie’s cleaning team based at Glasgow Central Station has starred in the fifth episode of the second series of the documentary, Inside Central Station, which aired on Sunday 31 May on BBC Scotland. Inside Central Station is a six-part fly-on-the-wall documentary series, showcasing all the hard work of employees on site to ensure that Scotland’s busiest train station runs smoothly.

The episode follows Davy Bowers, the Station’s Facilities Manager, and the rest of Mitie’s night shift cleaning team, as they work to get the station clean and ready for the thousands of passengers using the station every day. The episode sees the team undertake the nightly deep-clean of the Station, including the concourse, staircases, toilets, bird proofing spikes and a full floor clean, all in just a few hours before the station opens at 04:00. Going behind-the-scenes with the night shift, the episode demonstrates the vital role the cleaning team plays in keeping Glasgow Central running efficiently and on time, as one of the most important stations in Scotland. 26 people work in the Mitie team based at the Station, with cleaners on site 24 hours a day, 364 days a year.

Several Mitie employees also feature on the third episode of the documentary, showing how the team helps keep the station running not just by cleaning the site, but also supporting with other areas. In the episode two colleagues receive ‘Mitie Stars’ from the Station Manager, in recognition of their quick thinking to prevent a potentially serious accident. The employees noticed a train leaving the station with a door still open and quickly raised the alarm to stop the train, preventing what could have been a serious incident at the station.

Inside Central Station highlights the important work of all the employees at Glasgow Central that, while often going unnoticed by passengers, is vital to keeping the Station running. In the face of the Coronavirus pandemic, the role of these employees, including Mitie’s own cleaning team, is more important than ever. These colleagues have continued working hard to ensure that all areas of the station are clean and disinfected, limiting the spread of COVID-19 and helping people travel safely.

Richard Insull, Network Rail Managed Stations Account Director, Mitie:

“Our cleaning operatives and colleagues work tirelessly every day – and night – to ensure that Glasgow Central Station is kept clean. Whilst the team may often be in the background, their roles have never been more important, as they have continued to step-up to the challenges created by Coronavirus. We have always known that our people are true frontline heroes and we are so proud that they’re getting this moment of recognition for the rest of the nation to see.”
