Mitie’s ESG targets are in the bag

Saving 40,000 plastic bin liners from landfill is just one example of Mitie’s ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) achievements.

Our latest ESG Report details how Mitie has met or exceeded all 13 annual social value targets in the last 12 months.

The positive results demonstrate Mitie’s commitment to incorporating sustainability, social value and good governance throughout the organisation.

As usual, the strategy aligns with four social value pillars: Environment, People, Community and Responsible Supply Chain. The Innovation pillar is embedded within all the others, ensuring Mitie remains at the forefront of technology and processes.

Environment

Thanks to our liner-free ‘Bin the Bag’ product, 40,000 single use bin liners were removed from the waste stream in the last year. That’s the equivalent of 600kg of plastic. Mitie remains on track to reach zero waste to landfill by 2025.

In the past year Mitie also reduced emissions intensity by 41% to 5.28 tonnes, assisted by a 33 per cent electric fleet, which we aim to increase to 45% in the coming year. We remain on target to reduce our CO2 emissions to 5,220 tonnes by 2025.

With over 23,000 women on a workforce that spans five generations and consists of many employees who identify as disabled and LGBTQ+, as well as proud parents, carers and ex-military personnel, Mitie is hugely diverse. Over 3.5% of employees participated in an apprenticeship scheme over the past year. Meanwhile, since 2017 Mitie has reinvested £7.3 million in our apprenticeship schemes, and in 2021 we pledged to gift £1.1million of our Levy, supporting the UK apprenticeship community. Mitie has committed to increasing the percentage of colleagues participating in an apprenticeship scheme to 5% by 2025.

Community

Mitie is proud to support former servicemen and women who are re-establishing their lives and careers after leaving the Armed Forces. We were awarded Gold in the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme and we’ve signed the Armed Forces Covenant, demonstrating our support for the Armed Forces community. Mitie committed to ensuring at least 2.34% of our colleagues have a military background by 2025. In the past year, Mitie achieved 4.04%, which is considerably above target.

In the same year we spent over £1m with voluntary, community and social enterprises (VCSEs), remaining on target to reach VCSE spend of £2.25m by 2025.
