Recycling excellence with Parkdean Resorts

The challenge

Parkdean Resorts is the largest holiday park operator in the UK, with 67 holiday parks across England, Scotland and Wales. They are ambitious to be a sector leader in the way they manage their waste.

Historically, waste management at their sites was managed locally and through different suppliers. This made it extremely difficult to monitor and analyse both waste production and recycling levels across the company.

The company decided that they needed an innovative Waste Management Provider that could take care of their entire estate.

Solution

Prior to Mitie’s involvement, the overall recycling rate at Parkdean Resorts estate was just 9%. In order to address this, we increased the recycling services available on sites and implemented waste management education for staff.

In support of the company’s ambition to lead their sector in waste management, we have provided a monthly MI report, enabling them to see overall and individual park recycling rates, as well as contract service level data and information on the amount of money each park is saving due to improved waste management.

Outcome

On average, after 8 months of Mitie delivering waste management for Parkdean Resorts, the recycling rate had increased by 51%. A star performer was their largest site, achieving an impressive recycling rate of over 60%.

When Parkdean Resorts St Minver site needed to dispose of 225 chairs, we were able to source an alternative to recycling. Using our resource platform WasteMatch, we were able engage a local charity and the chairs were found new homes. Importantly, in addition to this method of disposal being both cost effective and environmentally friendly, the solution allowed the St Minver site to support their local community.
