Middle East situational update and assessment reports produced
Overview of the challenge
On 28 February 2026, the US and Israel carried out coordinated strike action against a range of military and political targets across Iran. Over the following week, conflict intensified across multiple regions, including the Gulf, Levant, Caucasus and the Eastern Mediterranean. This posed major risks to the international travellers, assets, and events associated with several multinational customers – two of whom had a major footprint in the region and critical levels of exposure to the rapidly developing security situation.
Risks to the companies included physical threats to assets and international travellers, and the logistical challenges of repatriation. Threats to these organisations were further compounded by the volume of attacks specifically targeting international airports and hotel chains, and the widespread issuing of NOTAM airspace closures throughout the region.
Our approach
In the weeks and months preceding the conflict, Mitie’s Intelligence Hub had been closely tracking various indicators regarding the growing likelihood of regional conflict. This allowed customers to take provisional measures to reduce and mitigate exposure risks from the war. Within ten minutes of mainstream media breaking the news, the conflict had been escalated to the Intelligence Hub on-call team and various clients.
Extra resource was rapidly mobilised by the Intelligence Hub, with an additional four analysts delivering rolling 24/7 alerts, customer-specific threat briefings, bespoke traveller monitoring and the continuous triage of a broad range of threats as the situation quickly developed. Initial responses focused mainly on kinetic threats to assets and travellers, airspace closures, carrier cancellations, key geopolitical developments, notable statements, and assessments aligned with customer security concerns.
In the following weeks, the Intelligence Hub delivered daily situational updates and forward-looking assessments. These focused on regional security threats, threats to international travel, and other global impacts from the conflict. These included potential risks to logistical supply chains, energy security, elevated protest activity, and communities across the globe.
