Using social media evidence to drive smarter decision making

Social media footage of disruption in retail stores was analysed by Mitie Intelligence to support the police investigation and prevent further antisocial behaviour.

The challenge

A major UK retailer became concerned about a public social media account that was sharing first-person videos filmed using smart glasses. The footage appeared to show suspected shop thefts and antisocial behaviour across multiple retail locations, attracting significant online attention. In one case, a video had been viewed more than 500,000 times, increasing the visibility and potential influence of the behaviour.

The retailer needed a clearer understanding of who might be involved, the potential risk to its stores, and whether the content could support further investigation.

Our approach

Our team carried out a detailed review of the social media account and related publicly available information. By analysing videos, online activity and recurring visual clues, including locations, vehicles and other identifying characteristics, we built a clearer picture of the individuals connected to the content.

The findings were brought together into a clear and practical intelligence report, providing the customer with evidence-based insight and helping them understand the potential impact on their business and retail partners.

Retail Shoplifting

The result

Our investigation identified two individuals linked to the footage and provided valuable lines of enquiry to support further action. The intelligence generated through the review contributed to the arrest of one of the individuals involved by local police.

Most importantly, the customer gained greater visibility of a developing retail security issue, enabling them to make informed decisions and work more effectively with partners and law enforcement.
