Mitie Power & Grid, is developing Windyhill Battery Energy Storage Site (BESS), a major new project in Bearsden, near Glasgow. Once operational, Windyhill BESS will store renewable electricity from the grid and release it when demand is high, helping to balance the electricity network, maximise the use of renewable energy across Scotland, and support a more flexible and resilient energy system. To mark the start of construction, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site.

Following completion in early 2028, Windyhill is expected to be one of Scotland’s largest battery energy storage facilities. Its first phase will deliver 200MW/400MWh of storage capacity, enough renewable electricity to power up to 55,000 homes for two hours, with a second phase of equal size planned. The site will help balance supply and demand across the grid and strengthen the resilience of the UK’s electricity network.

The project is being delivered in partnership with Revera Energy, an independent energy infrastructure business backed by Carlyle. Revera will provide the battery energy storage system while Mitie leads the design and construction of the 132kV grid connection, as well as the civil and electrical balance of plant (BoP) works. Mitie will also be responsible for the long-term maintenance of the site. Around 60 jobs are expected to be created during construction, supporting the local economy in Bearsden and the surrounding area.

Windyhill BESS forms part of Mitie’s wider commitment to supporting the UK’s clean power ambitions through the delivery of critical energy infrastructure including battery storage, solar PV, large-scale decarbonisation programmes and data centre infrastructure. To date, Mitie’s Projects division has delivered more than 40 BESS developments, representing over 40% of the UK’s operational BESS sites and helping to accelerate the country’s transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy system.
