No two days are the same for Jerry Williams, who works as a firefighter as part of Mitie’s contract with the UK Ministry of Defence Strategic Command on Ascension Island. It’s an isolated but strategically-located 33.97 square mile landmass in the South Atlantic Ocean. Jerry shared his experiences working for the UK’s leading facilities management company.

Custom Solar breaks ground on solar project with the DIO
Custom Solar, part of Mitie Power & Grid, has broken ground on a £3.9 million solar installation at Bassingbourn Barracks in Royston, Cambridgeshire, for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) on behalf of the British Army. The solar installation will produce around 2.2mWp of renewable electricity per year, enough to power the equivalent of 800 UK homes annually. The project builds on Mitie Power & Grid’s successful delivery of a solar installation at Weeton Barracks in Lancashire, which became operational earlier this year.

Mitie embarks on a new journey with South Western Railway
New three-year contract with South Western Railway (SWR) covering engineering maintenance and repairs for over 200 stations and a further ten train depots from Waterloo to Weymouth. Sustainability will play a central role throughout the contract, with Mitie deploying its Plan Zero experts to identify and deliver carbon cutting initiatives. As well as building on its existing intelligence-led security contract with SWR, this contract demonstrates further growth for Mitie’s rail transport business, which counts over ten train operating companies as customers.

Mitie welcomes next generation of engineering talent
Mitie has kicked off its engineering apprenticeship programme for 2024 with 80 new recruits eager to kickstart their careers. Each apprentice will focus on a specific aspect of engineering – from electrical and heating and ventilation to refrigeration and building services – at sites located across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This year marks the highest intake of engineering apprentices for Mitie to date, and underscores its commitment to grow and build its workforce with the skills needed for the future.

Mitie secures new IFM contract with London South Bank University Group
Mitie has been awarded a contract with London South Bank University (LSBU) Group to deliver integrated facilities management services for five years, with the option to extend for a further two. Delivering services across LSBU and South Bank College’s estates, this is the first time that all FM services across the university group will be brought together under one provider. Mitie’s social value approach will be key to the contract, including introducing apprentices and work placement opportunities for local residents.

Mitie recognised as Top 50 Inclusive UK Employer for the sixth year
Mitie has been named one of the UK’s top 50 most inclusive employers by Inclusive Companies in its 2023 Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers Index. This is Mitie’s sixth consecutive year on the Top 50 Inclusive UK Employer list, since its inception eight years ago. The announcement follows a successful year of award recognitions including Mitie’s third year as a Gold Award recipient on the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (DERS), and its Silver Status Award from the Inclusive Employers Standard.

Mitie installs 850+ EV chargers across the UK and Ireland
Mitie has installed over 850 electric vehicle (EV) charge points for customers across the UK and Ireland, with 10 installed at Royal London’s office in Alderley Park. Using its sustainability and fleet management expertise, Mitie is also helping Royal London maintain and manage its EV charge point infrastructure to support its decarbonisation goals. These customer charge points are in addition to over 1,000 EV chargers already installed at Mitie’s own sites and at its employees’ homes, to support the switch of its entire fleet of vehicles to electric.
