Top barriers to net zero revealed by sustainability leaders

New research from Mitie reveals that over four in five (84%) sustainability leaders feel confident businesses will be able to align with the UK’s net zero goals. In spite of this, price fluctuations and the reliability of renewable energy as well as securing capital for projects remain top concerns for achieving decarbonisation ambitions. Now in its third year, Mitie’s 2025 Net Zero Navigator report addresses these concerns with tips for navigating the path to net zero from Mitie’s energy experts and policy expert, Josh Buckland.

Mitie Landscapes boosts greener cities with Plan Zero City Landscaping

Mitie has launched a new Plan Zero City Landscaping Service, specifically designed to limit environmental impact in cities and urban areas. The service will support customers with net zero ambitions, by ensuring zero landfill waste, zero single-use plastic and will only operate electric vehicles and battery-powered equipment. The launch is another step towards Mitie achieving its Plan Zero commitment of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2025. This is the 550th electric vehicle, meaning that Mitie is three-quarters of the way to meeting its 20% by 2020 goal.

Mitie bolsters environmental commitment by joining Aldersgate Group

Mitie has joined the Aldersgate Group, the alliance to drive action for a sustainable economy, demonstrating its commitment to fight climate change and help other organisations reach net zero. The membership will enable Mitie to share its facilities management and sustainability expertise, particularly in areas such as electric vehicles, energy and waste management, with the Aldersgate Group and its members.

First-mover Mitie launches new apprenticeships on AI adoption

Mitie has welcomed the first cohort of apprentices to its new AI skills programme which has been developed by Corndel in partnership with Imperial College London and supported by Microsoft. The apprentices are based across the UK, including Birmingham and Nottingham, and work across Mitie’s areas of expertise from engineering to project management. The 12-month long programme is the first of three new AI programmes and will empower participants to become ‘AI Productivity Champions’ for the business.

Mitie crowns colleague stars of 2024

Mitie has held its 2024 Recognition Awards event, celebrating its colleagues’ diverse range of incredible achievements over the past year. The event recognised the winners of its 2024 Mitie Stars awards, some of its longest serving colleagues, its class of distinction achieving Level 7 Leadership apprentices, its Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) network leads, and top Apprentices of the year winners. Special guests Franceschina (Frankie) Romano and June Bearcroft, who are still working for Mitie at 92 and 89 years of age, also joined the celebrations.

Almost half of women feel unsafe on our streets, survey finds

Almost three quarters of people (69%) change their route home during winter to avoid walking in the dark, spending an average of £100 extra per month on taxis and public transport. Seven in ten (71%) say more needs to be done to improve street safety and one in five (19%) say employers should play a role in this. In response, Mitie has partnered with personal safety app, WalkSafe, to develop an enhanced service for organisations that want to offer additional personal safety support for their colleagues through a specialist 24/7 contact centre.

Mitie docks at the Port of Dover with new maintenance contract

Mitie has secured a new maintenance services contract with the UK’s busiest international ferry port which welcomes over 11 million passengers each year. Initially running for four years, the contract will cover maintenance and new installations across the Port of Dover’s estate which ranges from industrial facilities to commercial office buildings and residential flats. The contract includes an annual innovation fund for investment to support the acceleration towards a technology-enabled port as well as to drive carbon reduction initiatives in line with the Port of Dover’s net zero strategy.
