Case study 2 February 2020 Birmingham Airport – an integrated security solution The challenge Birmingham Airport sought an integrated security solution that ensured the safety of customers/staff and supported the smooth running of the airport. The solution had to be provided by a provider that demonstrated knowledge and experience tackling the very particular security demands of an international airport. We were awarded the Birmingham Airport contract in June 2013. Solution The security services we deliver for the airport include: X-ray screening and searching of staff/crew baggageVehicle searchesConducting foot and mobile patrolsImmigration presentationAircraft guarding and searchingAccess control In addition, the contact includes ensuring all personnel (staff, contractors and visitors) and vehicles entering the critical part of the airport are screened and searched to required CAA Standards. We also proactively support Birmingham Airports in-house team with other duties including assistance with central-search. Outcome Having been awarded the contract, we TUPE’d and retrained 120 security staff. Our experience of managing aviation TUPE transfers meant we ensured a seamless transition, with no negative impact on the airport’s day-to-day business. A dedicated mobilisation team was critical to the successful TUPE transfer. Constant communication through regular workshops and drop-in sessions meant staff and Birmingham Airport management were kept fully informed throughout the process, ensuring co-operation and collective buy-in. Throughout the mobilisation we worked with Birmingham Airport management to identify areas of efficiency – better training and smarter use of supervision resulted in cost savings for the airport. Other information Mitie’s airport security team are all recruited, trained and vetted to meet UK CAA standards. All security agents are trained to either Level 1 or Level 2 standards. We work closely with the CAA to ensure that all components of the service are compliant with regulations and standards.
