Case study 24 February 2023 Case study: Mitie lights up an iconic building on the Edinburgh skyline The Mound is an iconic building for Lloyds Banking Group, and the external lighting needed an upgrade due to its age. Mitie was challenged to design a new lighting scheme to reduce energy and enable the Group to mark events, like Pride, by lighting the building in any colour. They also wanted to bring the community together by highlighting and championing social change. Lloyds Banking Group is committed to delivering net zero carbon and halving its energy usage by 2030. Our brief was to provide the best energy efficient solution to reduce operational expenditure, whilst delivering on time and within budget. “Mitie exceeded our expectations upon commission of the project. We were delighted with the result, and The Mound is now one of the best lit buildings in Edinburgh!” Emma Johnson, Sustainability Programme Manager, Lloyds Banking Group Our Approach Mitie Lighting is a specialist division of Mitie Projects. Our team worked closely with industry leading external façade lighting specialists to find the most cost-effective and practical solution which met the brief. Through 3D renders, story boards and design modelling, we developed a lighting solution which gave Lloyds Banking Group autonomous control over the lighting scenes. The design materials also enabled the Sustainability project team to present and showcase the design intent to their stakeholders and wider social engagement peer group. The Results The result is an innovative and dynamic lighting solution which brings modern, colour-changing lighting to an area steeped in rich history and traditional architecture. The lighting brings The Mound to life, particularly at night, and enhances its status as a hub of art and culture in Edinburgh. Also, the project delivered against Lloyds Banking Group’s net zero carbon and energy targets, with a 73% reduction in energy consumption. The team removed and recycled 430 lights and lamps through the WEEE directive and 90% of the total waste was recycled. The Lloyds Banking Group team now has complete control over the colour changes and can cast dynamic light shows to mark social awareness events and annual occasions for the local public.
