Facilities management has transitioned to a digital-first, technology-backed model

As noted in the white paper foreword by Mitie CEO, Phil Bentley, the speed and scope of recent transformation marks a step change for the FM industry.

Mitie’s CEO, Phil Bentley, said:

“Facilities management has transitioned to a digital-first, technology-backed model: one where floors are still cleaned, but by smart, energy-efficient robots that disinfect using UVC light rather than harsh chemicals. Retailers still focus on protecting their people and merchandise, but data analytics and incident management inform the deployment of resources…In short, the days of facilities management are numbered; it’s now about facilities transformation.”

“The days of facilities management are numbered; it’s now about facilities transformation.”

With input from 20 leading practitioners across the UK and Ireland’s FM industry, the research uncovered increased focus on sustainability and environmental goals, with investment in new ways to power buildings and reuse resources.

Adapting workplaces to meet changing employee needs and expectations is also a big concern.

Mitie’s Head of Insight, Tina Hobart, said:

“To ensure workspaces remain fit for purpose, facilities managers must remain abreast of change and make adaptations, where necessary. Comprehensive workplace surveys, gleaning insight and establishing a baseline to move forward, offer ways to do so.”

The white paper features eight key questions FM leaders should be asking to ensure their organisations remain resilient in the new era of facilities transformation.

Hot topics covered include navigating the pathway to net zero carbon, the implementation of hybrid working policies and ensuring that workspaces are welcoming to minorities.

CEO of Nordic Foresight, Jeffrey Saunders, said:

“A high-performing workplace changes as the organisation transforms and is in perpetual ‘beta’. Facility managers must align organisational development ambitions with deep involvement in granular utilisation data.”
