A message to our Frontline Colleagues from Phil Bentley, Mitie CEO: Coronavirus update

Dear Team,

We know that the Coronavirus situation is a huge worry for everyone. There is nothing more important than our health and the health of our loved ones. And there is no bigger challenge the world is facing than Coronavirus.

We are all at risk, and those that can, are working from home. But if you are supporting our clients with Security, essential Maintenance, and vitally important Cleaning, you are on the Frontline.

So firstly, to these ‘Frontline Heroes’, I want to say a massive ‘thank you’.

While our managers and functional employees can deliver much of their work remotely, it is our Frontline colleagues, like yourself, who are keeping our company going and our country moving during these difficult times.

As a company, we take care of buildings and workspaces that 5 million Britons pass through every day. Without colleagues like yourself, delivering services across the UK’s critical infrastructure including hospitals, schools, power stations, drug manufacturing facilities, data centres, telephony infrastructure, supermarkets, offices, airports, sensitive Government buildings and immigration centres, to name but a few, we quite simply, could not continue to function as a company, or even as a country.

We are monitoring the situation as it develops and your safety and well-being is of the utmost importance to us. We’re liaising closely with the Government and continuing to take guidance from official sources and monitoring the potential impact across our workforce. The World Health Organisation and Public Health England have been very clear and consistent with their ongoing advice. The following guidance is important to take note of:

  • The risk of catching the virus from someone not displaying symptoms is very low.
  • The virus is passed through coughing and sneezing.
  • Regular hand washing is still the most effective method to reduce the spread of the virus.
  • Where shared phones, PDAs and tablets are used, use a disinfectant wet wipe to reduce onward transmission.
  • If someone is ill, the risk of catching the virus can be reduced significantly by remaining two metres away from them.
  • If you’re in a confined space (such as a lift) for short periods of time and a symptomatic individual is nearby, thorough washing of hands will greatly reduce the already small chance of infection.

What more are we doing at Mitie?

Well, firstly, I have made it clear that I expect all our Frontline colleagues to have access to the Personal Protective Equipment they need. If you don’t think you have this, raise it with your line manager or contact me at grillphil@mitie.com.

Second, everyone should have easy access to hand sanitizers, whether its Engineers or the Landscaping teams in their vans; Cleaning teams; or Security Guards, or indeed those working in offices. If you can’t find hand sanitizer, let us know.

Third, we’re committed to re-deploying as many of our colleagues as possible if clients do decide to shut their premises down. For example, where airports have been cutting back, we are seeing increased requirements in supermarkets. Where there may not be enough work in Technical Services, colleagues are helping out in Cleaning and Security.

In short, we are doing all we can to keep our people safe and in work.

Finally, I have asked our Senior Leaders to be there for everyone. To thank you and support you.

I appreciate this isn’t an easy time and we are here to support you 100%. If you begin to feel unwell with cold and flu like symptoms, please let your line manager know and follow the following guidance:

  • Please leave your site immediately.
  • Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.
  • If you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home, your condition gets worse, or your symptoms do not get better after 7 days, please use the Government 111 Coronavirus Service which is an online service. You can call 111 if you can’t get help online.

Whilst we are in unprecedented times, we need to keep delivering the critical services our country needs.
