Advancing lower-carbon, clinical waste solutions
Transforming clinical waste management through circular innovation
Healthcare organisations are under increasing pressure to reduce emissions, improve resource efficiency and manage rising waste disposal costs. Through Cliniwaste, Mitie is helping clients address these challenges by providing a lower-carbon alternative to traditional clinical waste treatment that combines sterilisation, material recovery and energy efficiency within a single integrated process.
Backed by a £300,000 investment at Mitie’s Nottingham facility, the upgraded system uses advanced shredding, autoclave and heat recovery technology to treat a wide range of clinical sharps waste streams. By diverting waste from incineration and recovering value from treated materials, the process supports both decarbonisation and circular economy objectives.
Reducing carbon emissions
Traditional treatment routes for infectious and pharmaceutical-contaminated sharps often rely on high-temperature incineration, resulting in significant greenhouse gas emissions and limited opportunities for resource recovery.
Mitie’s upgraded treatment process provides a lower-carbon alternative, delivering measurable emissions reductions while maintaining compliance and safety standards.
Supporting circular economy outcomes
The integrated process sterilises and shreds clinical waste, enabling plastic components to be separated and baled for recycling. Residual material is converted into Refuse Derived Fuel, reducing reliance on disposal routes and helping keep valuable resources in circulation.
This approach moves clinical waste management beyond disposal, transforming a traditionally linear process into one focused on resource recovery and reuse.
Improving energy and resource efficiency
An advanced heat recovery system captures and reuses energy generated during treatment, reducing demand for natural gas and electricity while improving operational efficiency.
The system also reduces water consumption through reuse processes, while fully condensing vapour within the treatment cycle to eliminate atmospheric releases and associated odour emissions.
Delivering sustainable healthcare solutions
The Nottingham facility demonstrates how innovation can help healthcare organisations reduce Scope 3 emissions, improve operational efficiency and control waste management costs.
As the only facility of its kind in the UK to integrate shredding, autoclaving, energy recovery and heat reuse at scale, it provides a practical pathway towards more sustainable clinical waste management.
Through Cliniwaste, Mitie is helping healthcare clients reduce emissions, recover resources and improve environmental performance, demonstrating how innovation can drive more sustainable outcomes across the waste management chain.
