Encouraging greener commutes

Encouraging greener commutes
Enabling lower-carbon commuting through data and behaviour change
Commuting remains one of Mitie’s largest sources of Scope 3 emissions after its supply chain, making it a key focus area within the Group’s wider Plan Zero strategy. Understanding how colleagues travel to work is critical to identifying opportunities to reduce emissions while improving accessibility, affordability and employee wellbeing.
During FY26, Mitie undertook its latest commuting survey to better understand employee travel patterns and the associated carbon impacts across its operations. The survey provides an evidence base to support targeted interventions, helping the business measure commuting emissions, track progress and identify opportunities to reduce reliance on higher-carbon transport modes.
Turning data into action
Alongside its own commuting analysis, Mitie continues to work with Mobilityways to support data-led approaches to measuring and managing commuting emissions. This enables both Mitie and its clients to move beyond assumptions and develop targeted initiatives that reflect how people actually travel, helping to prioritise actions where they can deliver the greatest impact.
The insights generated support wider decision-making around travel planning, workplace accessibility and sustainability reporting, enabling organisations to better understand the relationship between commuting behaviours, emissions and employee experience.
Supporting sustainable travel choices
Mitie continues to promote practical initiatives that help colleagues reduce the environmental impact of their journeys while also lowering personal travel costs.
These include funded railcards offering discounts on rail travel and the Cycle to Work scheme, which enables colleagues to save between 25% and 43% on bicycles and accessories through salary sacrifice arrangements.
Replacing a daily car commute with cycling for 200 days can save up to 0.5 tonnes of CO2 annually, demonstrating how small changes in travel behaviour can contribute to wider decarbonisation goals while supporting health and wellbeing.
Delivering progress through collaboration
By combining data, colleague engagement and practical travel initiatives, Mitie is creating the foundations for long-term reductions in commuting emissions. This approach supports both Mitie’s own carbon reduction ambitions and the services it provides to clients seeking to better understand and address emissions associated with workforce travel.
Through improved data, targeted interventions and practical support for sustainable travel, Mitie is helping colleagues and clients make lower-carbon commuting choices while supporting wider Net Zero ambitions.
