Health and safety
Keeping our colleagues safe and well is not a compliance target, it is the foundation of our culture and central to our purpose. Zero Harm underpins everything we do, and in FY26 we continued to embed proactive safety behaviours across every part of the organisation.
Mitie’s Zero-Harm culture, underpinned by the LiveSafe programme and our ISO 45001 accredited health and safety management system, delivered strong results in FY26. We carried out 13,815 LiveSafe visits and recorded 147,912 hazard observations, reflecting a proactive and open safety culture embedded across the organisation. Our Stand Down Days continued, pausing operations across the Group to hold focused safety conversations, encourage open dialogue and reinforce risk prevention behaviours.
LiveSafe Champions
LiveSafe Champions are central to how Mitie embeds its Zero Harm culture at the frontline. The programme empowers colleagues at every level to actively influence safety, health, wellbeing and environmental standards in their everyday work. Champions act as the eyes, ears and positive voice of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) in the workplace, identifying hazards, encouraging safe behaviours, supporting learning and challenging unsafe practices in a constructive and supportive way.
The programme delivers benefits at individual, team and organisational level. For colleagues, it provides a structured development pathway, building knowledge, confidence and transferable skills. For managers and teams, Champions become invaluable local advocates, helping embed consistent standards, strengthen incident prevention and reinforce expectations around safe working. By January 2026, 2,499 colleagues had enrolled in the programme, and Mitie is targeting a 5% annual increase in the ratio of Champions to total workforce.

Safety in action: Demo Day
In October 2025, Mitie brought colleagues together from across all divisions for a hands-on Safety Demo Day at its Technical Services Operations Centre (TSOC) in Manchester, showcasing two new colleague-informed solutions: the Ladder Extension by Checkmate Safety and the Quick Fold Liftpod by JLG Power Towers. Both were developed and refined using direct feedback from Mitie teams, ensuring the final designs addressed real operational challenges. The Ladder Extension enhances safety at height, while the Quick Fold Liftpod, the world’s first foldable liftpod, reduces physical strain and improves ease of transport and storage. Early trial results demonstrated strong potential to improve both safety outcomes and operational efficiency.
This event has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase some really innovative, and potentially game-changing, solutions. To have Mitie colleagues involved in their development is simply inspirational.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work
Mitie marked World Day for Safety and Health at Work by reinforcing its commitment to proactive risk management. Through the ‘Take 5’ approach, colleagues were encouraged to identify hazards in real time and take preventative action, supported by digital tools including real-time reporting and leadership oversight platforms. The initiative promoted continuous engagement, encouraging teams to share insights, raise concerns and drive improvement, reinforcing a strong safety culture across frontline operations.
Road Safety Week
Mitie reinforced its commitment to colleague and public safety during Road Safety Week, focusing on embedding consistent, preventative behaviours across its mobile workforce. Colleagues were encouraged to combine driver awareness with vehicle safety systems including advanced driver assistance technologies, while routine vehicle checks and prompt defect reporting were emphasised as essential controls. The use of telematics and dashcams support a data-led approach, enabling identification of unsafe behaviours, improving incident investigation and driving continuous improvement across fleet operations.
Occupational health assurance
In FY26, Mitie strengthened its occupational health assurance processes through updates to audit templates, improving consistency and visibility across operations. Structured escalation criteria ensure that gaps in compliance are identified early, supporting regulatory compliance and proactive management of workplace health risks in high-hazard environments.
External recognition
Mitie’s health and safety performance was recognised externally at the highest level in FY26. At the RoSPA Health and Safety Awards, Mitie secured 19 Gold Awards, including, for the first time, a Group-wide Gold for overall health and safety and a Group-wide Gold for fleet safety management. Major contracts recognised include MoD Corsham, Sellafield, Heathrow Aviation, GSK and the Government Property Agency, with JCA Engineering achieving its eighth consecutive Gold and Mitie Defence Gibraltar reaching 10 consecutive years of recognition. Mitie also achieved a five-star rating from the British Safety Council following a comprehensive independent audit across multiple sites and services, making Mitie the only business currently in the FTSE 250 to hold this accolade. Auditors highlighted strong leadership, clear accountability, a well-embedded safety culture and consistently high standards across operational sites and fleet activities.
Workforce wellbeing
Physical and financial wellbeing
Mitie takes a holistic view of colleague wellbeing, addressing physical, mental and financial health as interconnected drivers of a resilient and productive workforce. In FY26, the wellbeing offering was enhanced through the Employee Assistance Programme, with targeted digital programmes focused on priority risk areas including sleep, financial wellbeing and resilience. A network of over 400 Mental Health First Aiders provides accessible, peer-led support across the organisation, improving early identification of need.
Financial wellbeing remained a priority. In FY26, colleagues saved £419,600 through the MiDeals portal. The benefits framework supports longer-term security through life assurance, health insurance, virtual GP services and mortgage advice, alongside enhanced family-friendly policies including improved maternity and paternity provision and unpaid carers’ leave.
To support self-directed health behaviours, Mitie partnered with the NHS to provide access to the Healthy Choices Quiz and introduced the MyWellbeing programme, enabling colleagues to assess their health across activity, sleep, nutrition and mental wellbeing and take manageable steps to improve. Both initiatives help colleagues make informed decisions about their own health to access the right support at the right time.
Mental health
Mental health is embedded as a core component of Mitie’s people strategy. In FY26, a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Procedure was introduced, aligned to the UK’s Thriving at Work standards, providing a consistent framework for prevention, early intervention and support, including structured access to occupational health, counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy, alongside workplace adjustments where required. Line managers are supported through structured check-ins, targeted e-learning and specialist guidance to ensure consistent and informed responses to wellbeing needs across the organisation.
During Mental Health Awareness Week and Stress Awareness Month, Mitie promoted open conversations, early intervention and accessible support across the workforce. Structured stress risk assessments help colleagues and managers identify key drivers such as workload, role clarity and workplace change, enabling proactive management before issues escalate. The Mitie Wellbeing Hub extends support to colleagues and their families, offering guidance and resources around the clock.
By embedding mental health into everyday operations, through leadership accountability, peer support and accessible services, Mitie is building a workforce that is healthier, more resilient and better equipped to thrive.
