Large-scale energy storage powers the transition at Staythorpe
As the UK electricity system becomes increasingly reliant on renewable energy, energy storage is playing a critical role in balancing supply and demand, improving grid resilience and supporting the transition to a low-carbon future. Through Mitie Power & Grid and G2 Energy, Mitie is helping clients deliver the infrastructure needed to accelerate this transition.
In partnership with renewable energy developer Elements Green, Mitie is delivering the Staythorpe Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Once operational, the project will be one of Europe's largest battery storage facilities, helping to strengthen the UK's energy infrastructure while delivering environmental and social value for local communities.
Enabling a low-carbon energy system
Battery energy storage allows excess renewable electricity to be captured and stored when generation is high, before being released back into the grid when demand increases. This flexibility helps reduce reliance on fossil fuel generation, supports renewable energy integration and improves energy security.
At Staythorpe, Mitie is delivering a 360MW / 720MWh BESS alongside a new 400kV grid substation, creating critical infrastructure that will support the UK's transition towards Net Zero.
Supporting biodiversity alongside infrastructure
The transition to clean energy must also support nature recovery. Biodiversity enhancement has therefore been embedded within the Staythorpe development from the outset.
The project is targeting a 25.7% Biodiversity Net Gain, creating measurable environmental improvements beyond the site's pre-development condition. Planned enhancements include new woodland and wildflower habitats, alongside extensive tree planting designed to strengthen local biodiversity and enhance ecological connectivity.
Creating local value and skills
Major infrastructure projects can create lasting benefits for local communities beyond the asset itself. During construction, the Staythorpe project is expected to support local employment and skills development, contributing to economic growth within the region.
Community engagement also forms a key part of the project approach, with ongoing dialogue helping to ensure transparency, provide updates and enable feedback throughout the development lifecycle.

Generating on-site renewable energy at LEGOLAND®
Mitie is supporting clients to reduce emissions and improve energy resilience through the delivery of renewable energy infrastructure. Working in partnership with Zestec Renewable Energy and Merlin Entertainments, Mitie has delivered a landmark solar PV carport at LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort, demonstrating how on-site generation can support decarbonisation while enhancing the visitor experience.
Delivering clean energy at scale
The installation includes a 1.2MW solar PV system capable of generating more than 1.1 million kWh of renewable electricity annually. The system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 195 tonnes each year, equivalent to removing around 130 petrol vehicles from the road.
The renewable electricity generated is sufficient to power more than 400 UK homes annually and will directly support LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort's new Woodland Village, its first carbon-neutral accommodation offering.
Supporting energy resilience
By generating and consuming electricity on site, the resort can reduce reliance on grid electricity while improving energy resilience and supporting long-term sustainability objectives. The project complements existing renewable energy procurement and demonstrates how organisations can take greater control of their energy consumption and emissions.
In addition to generating clean energy, the solar carport provides shaded parking for visitors, combining environmental benefits with practical operational improvements.
Accelerating decarbonisation through partnership
The project supports Merlin Entertainments’ ambition to achieve Scope 1 and 2 carbon neutrality by 2030 and demonstrates the value of collaborative approaches to renewable energy deployment.

Renewable energy powers climate-positive ambitions at the Eden Project
Mitie is helping organisations accelerate their transition to low-carbon operations through the delivery of renewable energy infrastructure that reduces emissions, strengthens energy resilience and supports long-term sustainability goals.Through Custom Solar, part of Mitie, the company partnered with the Eden Project to expand its on-site renewable energy generation as part of the charity's commitment to become climate positive by 2030. Building on the site's existing investment in renewable energy, including the UK's first deep geothermal well since 1986, the project demonstrates how tailored solar solutions can help organisations reduce reliance on grid electricity while supporting wider decarbonisation objectives.
Delivering renewable energy infrastructure
Custom Solar designed, developed and installed a new 140kWp roof-mounted solar PV system, delivered in partnership with Zestec Renewable Energy through a Power Purchase Agreement. The approach enabled the Eden Project to increase its renewable energy capacity without significant upfront capital investment, providing a scalable and financially accessible route to decarbonisation.The project showcases Mitie's ability to support clients throughout the full lifecycle of renewable energy projects, from engineering design and development through to installation and integration with existing energy infrastructure.
Reducing carbon emissions and strengthening energy resilience
The solar installation is forecast to generate approximately 145,000 kWh of clean electricity each year, helping to reduce reliance on grid electricity while strengthening energy resilience across the site.
The system is expected to avoid approximately 32 tonnes of CO2e annually, supporting the Eden Project's carbon reduction programme while complementing its existing renewable energy infrastructure. The renewable electricity generated is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 29 UK homes.

JCA Engineering
Delivering circular construction and biodiversity at Kao Data
As part of JCAs commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, the team on the KLON-03 data centre construction project for their client Kao Data took the initiative to create a wildlife-friendly space on site using only recycled and repurposed materials. This grassroots effort, led by two team members, demonstrates how small actions can contribute meaningfully to our broader Corporate Sustainability Reporting goals.
With the pace of construction necessitating the removal of a landscaped mound to make way for additional car parking, the team recognised the importance of giving back to the environment. Nine trees from the site were carefully donated to a local contractor for replanting, ensuring their continued growth and benefit to the local ecosystem.
To further mitigate the environmental impact, leftover materials from the build were repurposed to create a small biodiversity hub. Items included reclaimed timber, surplus aggregate, and even a disused hard hat creatively transformed into a bird bath and insect hydration station.
The initiative supports both the Considerate Constructors Scheme and Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) targets, aligning with principles of biodiversity enhancement, responsible resource use, and community engagement. It serves as a simple yet powerful example of how construction projects can deliver environmental benefit alongside infrastructure development: turning what would be waste into opportunity.

JCA Engineering
Delivering energy optimisation for Battersea Power Station
At Battersea Power Station, JCA is delivering measurable environmental performance improvements through intelligent energy management and continuous system optimisation.
Over the past 12 months, the maintenance team has achieved energy savings equivalent to powering approximately 200 average UK homes for one year. These results have been driven through a data-led approach to building performance, focusing on improving the efficiency of key building systems.
Lighting systems have been optimised through tighter management of presence detection, timers, and daylight controls, ensuring energy is only used when required. At the same time, ventilation systems have been carefully refined to respond to occupancy levels, CO2 concentrations, temperature requirements, and external environmental conditions. This ensures that energy demand is closely aligned with real-time needs, reducing unnecessary consumption.

Decarbonisation DeliveredTM through smarter lighting
Lighting is often one of the most accessible opportunities for organisations to reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions and improve building performance. Through Mitie Lighting, Mitie helps clients accelerate decarbonisation through energy-efficient LED solutions, intelligent controls and innovative lighting designs that enhance workplaces, customer environments and public spaces.
Across financial services, transport, retail, education and leisure environments, Mitie Lighting is delivering measurable environmental and operational benefits through lighting modernisation programmes.
Reducing energy use and carbon emissions
Replacing legacy lighting systems with modern LED technology can significantly reduce energy demand while improving lighting quality and reducing maintenance requirements.
At Deloitte offices, Mitie delivered LED lighting upgrades and wireless controls, reducing lighting energy consumption by 65% and avoiding more than 30 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The project also adopted circular economy principles through the reuse of existing luminaire bodies fitted with bespoke LED gear trays.
For Ladbrokes, Mitie completed one of the UK's largest retail LED lighting programmes, replacing fluorescent lighting across more than 1,900 sites. The project achieved 69% energy savings across the portfolio, delivering significant carbon and cost reductions while supporting the organisation's environmental targets.
Supporting sustainable estates
Through LED technology, intelligent controls and circular economy design, Mitie Lighting is helping clients reduce emissions, lower operating costs and improve the performance of their estates.
Creating smarter buildings
Modern lighting systems can do more than reduce energy consumption. Intelligent controls help ensure lighting is used only when and where it is needed, improving efficiency while creating better environments for occupants.
At Network Rail's General Office headquarters, Mitie installed a new LED lighting system with wireless controls, incorporating daylight dimming and occupancy sensing technology. The upgrade is expected to generate £75,000 annual savings, reduce emissions by 36 tonnes of CO2 and deliver a 4.5-year payback, while improving workplace comfort and flexibility.
Enhancing places and experiences
Lighting also plays an important role in creating engaging, inclusive and customer-focused environments.
For Lloyds Banking Group, Mitie designed bespoke colour-changing LED installations that allow branches and offices to adapt lighting for awareness campaigns, diversity celebrations and corporate events. The solution combines flexibility, user experience and low-energy operation, demonstrating how lighting can contribute to both sustainability and social value objectives.
