Net Zero Navigator: the pivot senior leaders can’t ignore
In January 2026, Mitie launched its annual Net Zero Navigator, providing customers with expert insight into the trends shaping decarbonisation across compliance, energy, strategy, legislation and funding, and water. Designed to support organisations moving from ambition to delivery, the Navigator combines market intelligence with practical guidance to help embed Net Zero into core business strategy.
To mark the launch, Mitie hosted a client briefing at The Shard, bringing together more than 40 organisations, external experts and Mitie specialists. Insights from the session reinforced a clear shift in approach, with decarbonisation increasingly driven by energy resilience, regulatory pressure and cost control, rather than sustainability commitments alone. With the UK targeting a 68% reduction in emissions by 2030, organisations are now expected to demonstrate credible, data‑led delivery.
The Navigator outlines five priority areas shaping this transition: compliance, energy, strategy, legislation and funding, and water. It highlights how improving energy performance can unlock financial value, while investment in on‑site generation and storage supports long‑term resilience. It also emphasises the importance of integrated planning, funding alignment and cross‑functional collaboration to deliver measurable outcomes.
Collectively, these insights demonstrate how economic drivers are accelerating the transition, positioning Net Zero as a strategic and commercial priority. Through Net Zero Navigator, Mitie is supporting organisations to navigate complexity, embed decarbonisation into decision‑making and deliver measurable environmental and business value.

Network Rail EV Charging pilot
Powering a just transition through smarter EV infrastructure
As organisations accelerate the transition to low-carbon transport, ensuring that charging infrastructure is deployed in the right locations is critical to maximising environmental impact while avoiding unnecessary cost and stranded assets. Through Mitie EV Solutions, Mitie is helping clients take a data-led approach to fleet and infrastructure decarbonisation, ensuring investment is targeted where it can deliver the greatest value.
Working with Network Rail, Mitie developed an evidence-based electrification strategy to support the rollout of EV charging infrastructure across the organisation's extensive station car park network. The project sought to balance decarbonisation ambitions with affordability, accessibility and long-term operational efficiency.
Enabling smarter infrastructure investment
Rather than applying a standardised approach across the estate, Mitie undertook a pilot study across 25 station car parks, representing a mix of rural stations, town centres, urban locations and major transport hubs.
Using car park utilisation data, charging demand modelling and performance data from existing chargepoints, the analysis identified the factors most likely to influence successful charger deployment. The study found that user dwell time, rather than car park size, was the key determinant of charging demand, enabling infrastructure to be tailored to local requirements and improving utilisation.
The result was a scalable methodology that helps ensure investment is directed towards locations where charging infrastructure will have the greatest impact and value.
Driving resource efficiency and long-term value
The pilot also highlighted opportunities to improve efficiency through shared infrastructure. Mitie identified that 13 of the 25 sites were located within half a mile of a Network Rail fleet depot, creating opportunities to share grid connections and reduce overall infrastructure costs.
This approach is expected to deliver approximately 30% savings through shared grid investment, demonstrating how strategic planning can reduce both financial and environmental costs while accelerating deployment.
By combining demand modelling, infrastructure planning and operational insight, Mitie is helping Network Rail create a scalable roadmap for estate-wide electrification, supporting a just transition to low-carbon transport while delivering environmental, social and economic value.

Powering the Port of Dover’s journey
As part of its decarbonisation ambitions, the Port of Dover is planning the transition of its operational fleet and on-site service partners to EVs. To support this transition, Mitie's EV Solutions team developed an evidence-based electrification roadmap, helping the Port determine where, when and how charging infrastructure should be deployed across its Eastern and Western Docks.
Building a data-led electrification strategy
Using operational data provided by the Port of Dover, Mitie built on an earlier feasibility study, incorporating updated EV and charging data, real-world telematics, and detailed modelling of charging demand, power requirements and installation costs.
The assessment focused on a 130-vehicle service partner fleet, providing a clear understanding of fleet behaviour and future charging requirements across the estate.
The analysis found that approximately 75% of the service partner fleet travelled fewer than 30 miles per day, indicating that a significant proportion of vehicles were already suitable for electrification using existing EV technology.
Based on this evidence, Mitie developed a phased charging infrastructure plan aligned to operational demand, ensuring investment was targeted where it would be most effective.

Maximising existing infrastructure
A key finding from the study was that the Port’s existing substation could support the proposed charging infrastructure with only minimal load management during short daily peak periods.
This avoided the need for major grid reinforcement works and provided confidence that fleet electrification could be delivered within existing power capacity.
Supporting long-term decarbonisation
The project provided the Port of Dover with a phased, costed electrification roadmap aligned to genuine fleet demand. It also identified additional high-dwell locations suitable for future charging infrastructure, creating flexibility for further expansion as EV adoption increases.
Through a data-led approach to infrastructure planning, Mitie supported the Port of Dover in developing a practical roadmap for fleet electrification, helping align operational requirements with long-term decarbonisation objectives.

Strengthening sustainability performance through management systems expertise
Effective management systems provide organisations with the structure to improve environmental performance, enhance workplace safety, strengthen governance and drive continual improvement. Through its consultancy business in Ireland, Mitie supports clients in developing, implementing and maintaining internationally recognised management systems that embed sustainability into day-to-day operations.
In 2025, Mitie successfully delivered the end-to-end implementation of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems for Trane Technologies International Ltd in Swords, County Dublin. The project included gap analysis, management system design, staff awareness training, internal auditing and certification support, culminating in successful certification to both standards in July 2025.
Delivering certification and long-term value
Mitie's consultancy approach extends beyond certification readiness to support long-term management system effectiveness and continual improvement. Following certification, the team continued to support Trane Technologies through ongoing assurance activities, including surveillance audit preparation, internal auditing, compliance management and continual improvement planning.
This approach helps clients maintain robust management systems that support environmental performance, employee wellbeing and regulatory compliance while ensuring readiness for future external audits.

GSK Net Zero Pathway
As part of Mitie’s investment commitment under the facilities management contract, we partnered with GSK to help shape a clear and credible route towards Net Zero at one of its key UK pharmaceutical manufacturing sites. The study was designed to turn ambition into action, providing a practical pathway to support the site’s commitment to achieve an 80% absolute reduction in operational emissions by 2030, with longer-term Net Zero ambitions extending to 2045.
Our assessment showed that Scope 1 emissions, primarily from natural gas used for steam generation and combined heat and power, were the most significant barrier to decarbonisation. In response, Mitie developed a phased pathway based on three principles: optimise, economise and decarbonise. This approach prioritised early operational improvements and cost savings, while setting out a longer-term plan for larger capital interventions aligned to asset lifecycles and operational resilience.
The final pathway identified £7.4 million of targeted investment, with the potential to deliver 1,613 tCO2e of annual carbon savings. Combined with projects already underway, the programme supports total savings of 6,789 tCO2e, placing the site on a credible trajectory towards its 2030 target.
