Transforming healthcare waste through innovation
At Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH), Mitie is helping transform waste management through the implementation of England’s first hospital-based small-scale Materials Recycling Facility (Mini MRF). Introduced at Hull Royal Infirmary in May 2025, the facility supports improved waste segregation, increased recycling and enhanced visibility of waste streams, helping the Trust reduce environmental impacts while improving operational efficiency and safety.
Serving a population of more than 600,000 people and providing tertiary services to over 1.2 million patients, HUTH faced challenges common across the healthcare sector, with significant volumes of recyclable materials being disposed of as general waste. Through the introduction of the Mini MRF, Mitie has helped the Trust recover more materials for recycling and reduce reliance on general waste disposal.
Driving circularity and resource efficiency
By manually sorting domestic waste on site and increasing segregation across wards and departments, the Mini MRF has significantly improved resource recovery and recycling performance.
The facility also diverts food waste to anaerobic digestion, supporting circular economy principles and reducing the volume of waste requiring disposal.

Improving safety and compliance
The Mini MRF has strengthened waste governance by improving oversight and identifying incorrectly segregated materials before disposal.
Enhanced monitoring and reporting have increased the identification of mis-segregated waste, while the facility has intercepted potentially hazardous items including clinical waste, sharps and batteries.
By preventing these materials from entering inappropriate waste streams, the system helps reduce fire risk, improve compliance and enhance safety across the hospital estate.
Supporting smarter waste management
The introduction of the Mini MRF has improved waste data visibility, enabling targeted engagement with departments and supporting behavioural change across the Trust.
Better segregation, improved compaction and more efficient waste handling have reduced operational demands, while enhanced reporting provides greater insight into waste generation patterns. The Trust is also better positioned to meet future regulatory requirements, including the introduction of Simpler Recycling reforms.
This project demonstrates how Mitie’s waste and environmental services go beyond collection and disposal, delivering integrated, data-driven solutions that improve environmental performance, reduce costs and enhance safety.

Mitie has worked in partnership with St George’s Hospital to help the Trust meet NHS England’s 20:20:60 clinical waste segregation target, which aims for 20% high-temperature incineration, 20% alternative treatment (orange bag) waste and 60% offensive (tiger bag) waste. This ensures that waste is managed through the most appropriate treatment route based on risk and classification. The joint programme has reshaped how clinical waste is segregated across the hospital, reducing costs, cutting carbon, and embedding a model of continuous assurance that is now part of day-to-day ward operations.
A joint St George’s Hospital and Mitie project team worked closely with clinical staff, Infection Prevention and Control, Estates & Facilities teams, and ward managers to improve segregation at the point of disposal. Through ward-level audits, standardised waste infrastructure, clear signage and targeted staff training, the programme reduced the amount of non-infectious waste entering higher-cost and higher-carbon treatment routes.
A key factor in the programme’s success was the introduction of a continuous assurance model, with weekly ward audits, frontline coaching, immediate feedback and monthly performance reviews helping to embed lasting behavioural change and improve waste segregation. Between April 2021 and March 2026, alternative treatment waste reduced by 68.7%, from 88.48 tonnes to 27.71 tonnes per month, while offensive waste increased from 13.98 tonnes to 76.91 tonnes per month, achieving the NHS 20:20:60 target. The programme also reduced waste-related carbon emissions by 29.6%, improved the efficiency of waste management processes, trained over 1,700 staff, and completed approximately 323 ward audits, with 94% of surveyed staff reporting confidence in making the correct waste segregation decision.

Looking ahead, St George’s Hospital and Mitie will continue to sustain performance through ongoing assurance, staff engagement, and governance reviews, while sharing best practice across the NHS to support wider carbon reduction and waste segregation improvements.

Giving Le Manoir’s assets a second life
In January 2026, Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, the renowned two-Michelin-starred Belmond hotel and restaurant in Oxfordshire, embarked on an 18-month, multi-million-pound redevelopment programme. As part of the project, Mitie was tasked with managing several thousand assets across the estate, including bedroom furniture, soft furnishings, fixtures and fittings, office furniture, audiovisual equipment, and catering equipment.
A comprehensive estate audit undertaken in September 2025 established the scope of works and asset condition, with the final approach agreed in November 2025. While a proportion of assets were designated for storage and relocation, all remaining surplus assets fell within Mitie’s remit to identify circular economy solutions that maximised value and minimised waste. The client established two clear objectives from the outset: to find reuse solutions for as many assets as possible and to achieve zero waste to landfill.
By embedding circular economy principles into the redevelopment from the start, Mitie successfully cleared all assets within agreed project timeframes while supporting the client's wider ESG ambitions. More than 40 tonnes of CO2e emissions were avoided by reusing, redistributing and storing assets rather than disposing of them and purchasing replacements. Of all assets managed during the project, only a single skip of genuine end-of-life materials, with no viable reuse or donation route, required disposal.
Reuse solutions took many forms. Around 1,400 assets were placed into storage for future use, helping avoid future procurement requirements. A further 2,000 assets were resold through auction, generating financial value, while more than 200 items found new homes through donation and private sale. The team also identified additional assets across kitchens, sheds and storage areas, expanding the original scope and diverting almost five additional tonnes of material from disposal. The project also generated significant social value. Carpets were donated to a reuse charity for repurposing within domestic homes, while around 250 kg of surplus food was provided to local community organisations through a food hub and bakery partnership. Furniture and materials supported the work of a local artist, and numerous donated assets helped Barnardo’s raise funds to support vulnerable children and young people across the UK.
By keeping materials and products in circulation, the redevelopment avoided thousands of pounds in disposal costs, helping offset project expenditure while demonstrating what can be achieved when sustainability and reuse are integrated into project planning from the outset rather than treated as an afterthought.
